I'm such a Hiaasen fan that I was thrilled to pick this up at the July 11 meeting of our local Book Crossers group. Who cares that it's a kids' book... look at Lemony Snicket! Anyway, really looking forward to reading this one. By the way, though it has passed through the hands of at least two other Book Crossing members, but somehow was never registered, so here goes...
7/17/06: And a pleasant read it was, indeed. Hoot has the same sort of eccentric characters as Hiaasen's books for the adults, though they are less sassy or raunchy. There's also the same level of humor in that the actions of the characters are unpredictable and outrageous. The story line is that a chain of pancake restaurants is starting construction for a new restaurant, on land where burrowing owls have their nests. The owls will be buried alive if construction proceeds, and the restaurant people are showing absolutely no conscience about the situation. So what is a nature-loving teen to do, but find ways to protect the owls and discourage the construction?
I've lent the book to a teenage niece, and expect to release it at the August meeting of the TriValley Book Crossers in Dublin, California.

Picked up at tonight's meeting for Ian to read to Sean during bath time as Sean is nuts about owls. They both want to read the book before we rent the movie. I've already read the book earlier for a book ring.
