This book was first published in 1957, in an age when the danger of nuclear war was much lower than today, but perceived as being much higher. A group of American submarine crewmen and Australians face death by nuclear radiation. Gathering in the south of the Australian continent, they live the last days of the human race.
This book has been made into a film twice: 1958 with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, and 2000 with Armand Assante and Rachel Ward.
