DoveiLibri asked me to send this to knitwit to fulfill a holiday wish. Enjoy!

Thanks for sending this, ResQGeek. I'm making good progress through the Newbery winners and honor books and I'm always glad to get one that I am missing. I'm sure my kids will read this too - I think it's on the Reading Olympics list for this year.

And thanks to DoveiLibri for her part in this also!

Finished today. What a shameful time in our past. Though this book is fiction I know that there are families who had to endure ordeals just like the Logans. Written with a great deal of sensitivity and care, Roll of Thunder should be read by everyone - kids and adults alike.

I have already pledged this book to round 4 of spacedog's Newbery Winners and Honors Bookring; should be starting fairly soon.

OK ... BookCrossing is confusing and WONDERFUL! How we *L*A*U*G*H*E*D* when we opened this book ... AFTER we realized what was going on!!!

We received this book as part of Round 4 of Spacedog's Newbery Bookring ... but when we opened it up, there was a note: "A holiday wish from Dove i Libri! Enjoy!"

Huh? We *A*R*E* Dove i Libri .... turns out that at Holiday time, we acted as a go-between to grant a holiday wish and arranged to have this book sent from ResQGeek in Virginia to KnitWit in Pennsylvania, and THEN when the BookRings were announced, we wanted to read this book's PARTNER (The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin ~~~Link~~~ ) so we requested the pair of them because they're traveling together, and THIS surprise ended up HERE!

How funny is THAT????

ANYWAY ... The Librettos have both read this book in school. So, as soon as they've finished The Westing Game, we'll send them both along to the next person ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June 4, 2007: The Librettos finished The Westing Game, so these two books will be on their way to the next participant, SpaceDog, soon!
got yesterday. thanks.
i have to apologize, b/c i'm sure this is the longest i've ever kept a bookring. i had the hardest time getting through this. when i think about it i should've enjoyed this book a lot more than i did, b/c it's an interesting and generally moving account about life in the south post-civil war and before the civil rights movement. i'm not quite sure why i didn't like this. i didn't like the main character very much, who seemed incredibly (although realistically) naive and childish and self-centered. i never really felt like i got to know the characters and their motivations either, as the main character is mostly just a passive observer of the adults. also, i feel like i've read a lot of books like this (e.g. books by toni morrison) so it's getting harder and harder for me to stay interested in reading books that cover similar ground. but if i can get past all of that, the book is well written and there are some scenes that will def. stick with me.
will def. be sending out right away.
I had a hard time getting into this book as well, but once I started it in earnest, I read it straight through. It seems familiar to me but perhaps that is because the subject matter is often, sadly, explored in other books, whether as a backdrop or as the main story. This was very well-written and ultimately very poignant. The land itself and all it represented to the Avery family was an additional dimension to the richness of the story.
Will be sending it to yokaye this week with The Westing Game.
Finally finished this today. I picked this up once, and just couldn't get into it, and so I skipped it and went into The Westing Game first. After I finished that book, I picked this one up again and didn't have a problem with it at all.
It is a moving story, one that parallels the lives of far too many families in that era and beyond. Although the subject matter is familiar and I wouldn't say it's the finest example of this kind of story I have read, I would recommend it highly. I think it offers a glimpse into the past of American history and can be a lesson to us all, young and old, black and white.
