Sara Smolinski is the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi. She does not want to enter into a loveless marriage. She leaves her family, gets a job as an an ironer and struggles to be independent. Set in the 1920's in the lower east side of New York City.
This was a beautifully written book. It was written in 1925 by a young Polish immigrant woman about life in the lower east side Jewish ghettos of New York City. It is the story of a young woman rebelling against the totalitarian rule of her father. The fact that she is writing out of her own personal experience makes the book much more interesting and credible to me.
