Canal Dreams

Hisako Onoda, world famous cellist, refuses to fly. And so she travels to Europe as a passenger on a tanker bound through the Panama Canal. But Panama is a country whose politics are as volatile as the local freedom fighters. When Hisako's ship is captured, it is not long before the atmosphere is as flammable as an oxy-acetylene torch, and the tension as sharp as the spike on her cello...
CANAL DREAMS is a novel of deceptive simplicity and dark, original power: stark psychological insights mesh with vividly realised scenarios in an ominous projection of global realpolitik. The result is yet another major landmark in the quite remarkable career of an outstanding modern novelist. -

Thank you very much caffcaff :-D I think this book might be added to the summer Mount TBR. Thanks for the lovely bookmark as well!
Mount TBR fell down a few weeks ago and I picked up this book whilst restacking them. So much for summer reading ;-)
A bit of strange book. It's written in 1989 and quite short so perhaps it's written in the context of a time I'm too young to remember? The story is told from the point of view of Hisako Onoda, a Japanese cellist who is scared to fly. She is travelling to Europe on a tanker which has been held up in the Panama Canal due to the political climate. This story is intertwined with her early cello lessons right up to her 30s.
The book has a violent and gritty end. I'm still not quite sure what happens at the end. I guess this book shall be looked up on Wikipedia. Thanks again to caffcaff who sent me this :-)
EDIT: I was watching Bowling for Columbine and guess what popped up during a montage? In 1989 the US invaded Panama to overthrow a former CIA agent who was the President. So that explains the events in the book.

I took a small group of guests to visit a remote chapel at Langley in Shropshire - there I found the book in the 17th pulpit of this lovelt, tiny, redundant chapel! I am travelling to Liverpool soon & will release it there - might tuck it in a hotel drawer for the next visitor to find!
