I haven't read Philip Roth for a long time, since "Good-bye Columbus" actually for a religious school class--yeah, it was a pretty progressive. Not all writers are observers but I think Roth is, and his documentation of human behavior, especially the choices people and/or how or why them make them--is a real chronicle of our culture. I think this novel is about human nature and the mistakes we make. The chronicling and the detail is very sharp and keen, although there are two major tangents--one I feel was more tied to the plot that than the other--which get a bit meandering and at times up on the soap box, including: 1) Monica-gate theories et al, 2) Vietnam War Vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Again the latter does seem to have more of a key role in the plot structuring and is also quite current as playing a large role in American culture, as PTSD is being identified as a large component of a lot of military personnel's experience serving in Afganistan and Iraq now. An interesting read. Setting aside for the November '06 Boston Bookcrossing Meet up.

Caught at tonight's meetup at Algiers in Cambridge, MA. I am currently reading Roth's "The Plot Against America." I have been enjoying it immensely. SO, I thought would grab this one, too.
