From the back cover:

Eleven-year-old Adam loved to travel through the open roads of thirteenth-century England with his father, a wandering minstrel, and his red spaniel, Nick. But when his father suddenly disappears and Nick is stolen, Adam finds himself alone searching these same roads filled with rich merchants, pilgrims with cockleshells upon their hats, farming folk driving pigs to the fair, minstrels and priests, saints and thieves - and somewhere in the crowd his father and his dog.

This book won the Newbery Medal in 1943. I purchased it at Katy Budget Books in Katy, Texas while in Houston during Hurricane Katrina.

I did enjoy this book, though my reading of it was somewhat disjointed due to dealing with Hurricane Katrina stuff. I would like to read it again at some point in the future when I am less distracted by other events.

I apologize for taking so long to journal this book. I am usually very prompt with them. Anyway, the book arrived safe and sound. I think it is next on my TBR list, and it looks pretty interesting :o)

A very GOOD book! An excellent adventure. After reading a couple pages at a time, as time was available, I was able to start at page 80, last night, and complete it this morning.

While this was a great story, it's funny how much a child was expected to know, in the early nineteen-forties, that this was considered a "children's" book. In today's society, I would strongly recomend the parent/guardian read the book first, to prepare for the inevitable battery of questions. And, if no questions are asked by the child, the adult should ask a few.

Thank you, raralovestoread, for the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful work of children's literature. Oh, and I noticed the book was once in Katy, Texas, where my brother and his family have been for the last ten or so years. Small world!

Happy Reading :o)
