"A superb portrait of a woman coping with the shadow of loss as she sifts her way with honesty and compassion through secrets shared by one family and a whole society."
This is a very powerful and sometimes harrowing book but rewarding for the depth of emotional intensity portrayed. I found the insights into the often dysfunctional aspects of family life were very well done. All that aside I couldn't put the book down! Surprising considering the subject matter, but this is a compulsive read. Mothers of small boys: you are warned!

I received this today. It's about 3rd/4th on my list, but won't take very long with the commuting by rail. Thanks, lakelady2282. Tassie reminds me a bit of NZ, must be the Englishness & the compactness.

It is a deeply emotional & quite shocking book to read. I found it disturbing but, as I don't have small children, I should manage to sleep without nightmares.

Eithne Farry, Irish Post, sums up quite well, "O'Riordan's work is concerned with hidden things, the unsettling secrets of the past that seep into the present. That revelatory quality is evident in all her work, as well as a strain of violence, visceral and disturbingly realistic."

Off to funkybamboozle tomorrow, 08/04/05.

Arrived today in time for my adventures down in Melbourne!!

Journal Entry 6 by Funkybamboozle from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, May 10, 2005
I understand how this book could be considered shocking as it does conjour up a number of emotions and plays on our maternal instincts (if we're female!) - but I did have a lot of trouble getting through this book. I found the writing style to be lacking that special something.

I will assume that the problem was my inability to relate to the characters. Could this be because I am not a mother and am a newly wed? Perhaps, but I don't think so. I just didn't find Julia to be that enchanting, nor her husband. If the book had been written about Sam or Edward I think I would have enjoyed the book.

The best part of the book was in the closing episode with the dog.

I will be sendin this out to bookfairy65 tomorrow (fingers crossed I get to the PO)

Thanks Lakelady for the ring

Received in todays mail. I have one ring ahead of it, but will get to it ASAP.

Kate O'Riordan is extremely clever and accurate in describing the grief and raw emotion felt by the characters in this story, she doesn't miss a thing; guilt, sadness, anger, fear, denial and questioning.

I thought this was a very well written, though haunting novel. It tells of the damaging effects and coping mechanisms of an abusive childhood, that follow the victims into adulthood.

I will get this book out to Ravenbear ASAP.

EDITED TO ADD (26/5/05):
I messaged Ravenbear a few days ago regarding this book, and have not heard back as yet. Lakelady has requested I wait 2 weeks to hear back, before moving onto next person on list.

Have just received in the mail. My mother has claimed it for a read first so will try to read as quickly as possible after Mum has finished it and send it on its way again.

Hey, was just wondering what is happening with the book. Could you let cat207 know. Thanks

Journal Entry 12 by Ravenbear from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Wednesday, April 4, 2007
My mother dropped in for coffee a few days ago, and I was going through a box of books I had found downstairs that had been packaged for posting, some waiting for addresses...and hadn't gone. She asked what I was doing with them and I said, these are all books that I didn't realise I still had, they were supposed to have gone on to other bookcrossers an aeon ago...and she said, Oh, I think I have some of your bookcrossing books...
She arrived round here for coffee this morning, and had this one with her...
So I have pm'd cat207 and hopefully this book will be travelling again today or tomorrow.

Dear Ravenbear,

Thanks so much for returning the book. An archaeological degree! How fascinating. Have you been on any digs yet?
