The limits of fifteen-year-old Kambili's world are defined by the high walls of her family estate and the dictates of her repressive and fanatically religious father. Her life is regulated by schedules: prayer, sleep, study, and more prayer. When Nigeria begins to fall apart during a military coup, Kambili's father, involved mysteriously in the political crisis, sends Kambili and her brother away to live with their aunt. In this house, full of energy and laughter, she discovers life and love - and a terrible, bruising secret deep within her family.

A beautiful and at times harrowing story, you almost want to read with your hands over your eyes. It gives you an insight into a country I knew very little about, at a time of socio-economic and political upheaval. A fantastic read.
Longlisted for the 2004 Man Booker Prize and shortlisted for the 2004 Orange Prize.

Arrived today, nearly finished it due to lengthy wait for hospital appointment and public transport. PMing next player now.

Kambili's tells her story without pathos or self-pity, but plenty of compassion and understanding for those around her. Set in today's Nigeria, alternately verdant and baking in drought, torn apart by politics, corruption and conflicts of faith. On a microcosmic scale, these themes continue in Kambili's family. She does not judge as events unfold, keeps observing, telling, feeling, all with an incredibly vibrant narrative voice. This is a book I proabbly wouldn't have picked up without the recommendation that came with this bookring originally, but I'm glad to have read it.

I loved this book - not my usual reading material, but I am so glad I read it.
I don't want to give too much away, but it gave me an insight into life in Nigeria.
This is one of the best books I've read this year. I would recommend this to anyone.
Awaiting for the next participants address to send on.

Arrived safely this morning and added to my pile of rings ....hope to read it early next week
This is a strong, powerful novel, dark and bleak in places, but compelling all the same.
Now passing on to the next reader

Arrived today, thanks to Vespa for sending it on to me. Will start to read this as soon as I have finished my current book.
Finished reading this last night - wow, fabulous book. Really drew me in and i was both wanting to read more, but not as I knew that there was something horrendous on the way. Enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the world around Kambii as well as her internal emotions, and was pleased that the ending surprised me and didn't go down the obvious route that I thought it might go in at one point.
Thanks to Caro1 for sending this round, I will send on as soon as I can.

Sent on to Jaynereader today - sorry for the delay in sending - life events have got in the way of BXing at the moment.
Received safely thanks psychjo. I'll be able to start this in the next few days. Thank you Caro1!
I enjoyed this book very much. I found the abuse scenes disturbing, mainly because of how passive Jambili and Jaja become under their father's repression. It was good to see how both siblings come out of their shell gradually, and the ending is full of hope.
Thanks Caro1 for organising this, and for the list of points to think about. Interesting as always!
This book is going back to its owner soon.

Caught at the Nottingham meetup... as you can notice, I wasn't very good in resisting picking up books, so ended up taking 3 home with me. So much for being strong!
I will read it once there will be a gap in between the rings and rays that keep on coming, despite having avoided signing up for more for months now...
