The Dante Club : A Novel

It took me about a month to slog my way through this book for various reasons--one of which was that it took me a while to become accustomed to Pearl's writing style. While the first two thirds of the book are a bit slow, the last third more than makes up for it. I was a bit dismayed by the somewhat stereotyped depictions of the historical characters (Lowell, Longfellow, Holmes, etc.) and sometimes found it difficult to suspend disbelief in the face of some of their actions, but i don't know enough about their lives to comment more than that. Regardless, the fictional characters in this book sometimes come across as deeper and better developed. The suspense aspect is maintained well throughout the course of the story, and i found its resolution for the most part satisfying.
Book Condition: Excellent, first-owner.
From the back cover:
"Boston, 1865. A series of murders, all of them inspired by scenes in Dante's Inferno. Only an elite group of America's first Dante scholars--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J.T. Fields--can solve the mystery. With the police baffled, more lives endangered, and Dante's literary future at stake, the Dante Club must shed its sheltered literary existence and find the killer."
