From the back of the book:
'On St. Valentine's Day in 1900, a party of nineteen girls accompanied by two schoolmasters sets off from the élite Appleyard College for Young Ladies, for a day's outing at the spectacular volcanic mass called Hanging Rock. Some were never to return. The picnic, which begins innocently and happily, ends in inexplicable terror...'

No one knows if this is a true story or fiction. It is based on a real picnic that took place in 1900.

I had never heard this book before so I didn’t have any expectations. This must be much common in Australia where the story is located.

It took me a while to get trough this although it’s a short story. I find it hard to read because of the text and the missing phases. However the story was quite ok, maybe a bit dull in the middle.

I will send this to pam99 today. Thanks jaynereader for sharing!

Historical fiction isn't usually my sort of thing, but I enjoyed this one. I've visited a house near Adelaide (Clare Valley, I think) that had some connection to Picnic at Hanging Rock - I think it was used as the school in the film version - so it was interesting to read the book at last! Will be on its way to NeedSun this afternoon.

This was an interesting book. There were so many loose ends that I was left unsatisfied at the end.

I will put this in the mail to portable-solace in the next few days.
