Medieval West Country mystery, last of a series of thirteen. It is easily read as a stand alone but I think reading the series would enhance one's enjoyment.

The Abbot's wine is missing and a body is found on the Devonshire moors. Bailiff Simon Puttock is called to investigate. Most characters know something, and have secrets, misconceptions or grudges. The book is a slowish read but the pieces fall together satisfactorily like a jigsaw puzzle.
The historical background detail is excellent.

There is one aspect of the plot that I thought didn't make sense, although Jecks gives a perfectly good explanation for it - but it would be a spoiler to discuss it here.

For Shylock's historical mystery book box.

Haven't read this Jecks so pleased to find it in the returned historical mystery box.

Good background detail, highly convoluted mystery, what more could one ask. Think this will find its way to Leeds meetup.

Once again the historical whodunnits head my way! Thanks Carol. Will go on my TBR shelf, but will probably jump the queue as I know I'll probably enjoy it.

Taking to read on holiday in Croatia. Will release it when I'm finished.

This was OK - bit more detail about bodily emissions than I usually like in my holiday reading. Would have enjoyed it more with a bit more character development and a little less farting (In the book that was - I have no problems with my own digestion...) Other than that - a ripping yarn (excuse the pun)
