long winded, and not a good enough story. the erotica takes too long, and the filler is not engaging enough. I did not get 'into' the main character enough toc are about ehr, or anyone else in the story. I read the whole first letter but kept putting off the second in favour of other things.

Picked up at the uncon. Thanks Suedo. I was intrigued enough to try this, though I hear it's not as good as it's classical status might suggest. Will give it a go. It's only short.
Goodness gracious me! I may be a little naive, but Fanny Hill was racier than I expected for eighteenth-century literature. If I'd thought more sensibly of it beforehand, then maybe this isn't the book I'd have chosen to start reading in the office kitchen at lunchtime today:-) It was a fun read though. I'm glad I picked it up.
On a side note, I'm amused to see this copy listed as a graphic novel above. I imagine a graphic novel version of Fanny Hill would be quite an eye-opener :-)

Gosh, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to say about this book. I 'knew' that this was going to be 'racy' and had been banned, but hadn't quite realised just how explicit it would be. Not that I'm shocked or anything, I'm pretty broad minded, I just didn't expect anything written in 1749 to be quite so graphic. Those of my friends who found 'Crimson Petal' a bit strong had better get their smelling salts handy!
The story is that of Fanny Hill, a young girl born near Liverpool. Her parents both die and she decides to try her 'luck' in London. Well I guess it depends on your viewpoint as to how 'lucky' she actually is. She falls, by chance, into prostitution and her exploits are vividly detailed in the form of letters to an unknown recipient.
Whilst obviously written by a man, it's interesting to note that Fanny and the other girls are actually depicted as enjoying sex - a new departure! Contrasts vividly with, the later, Victorian times when sex was often depicted as something to be endured as a wifely duty.
This is listed in the 1001 books you must read before you die http://www.listology.com/list/1001-books-you-must-read-you-die and I can understand why.

During the Edinburgh Festival last year (2010) I wild released 50 books around various venues to 'celebrate' my birthday. I got 9 'catches' which I thought was pretty good going.
It proved to be quite addictive, so this year I thought I'd have another go. Collecting 50 books is quite a challenge, so not all the books are ones that I've read, if they are then my journal entry will be somewhere above.
Expect releases to take place between 10th August 2011 and 4th September 2011.
Thank you for picking up this book. I hope you enjoy reading it & look forward to reading your journal entry & those that follow. You don't have to join to journal (you can do that anonymously) but it's free, so if you're a bookworm that likes to pass on books, why not join in.
I will try & update these release notes with the actual details ASAP after release and will tweet their location as I go (@cassandra2020)

Arrived safe and sound.
Thanks very much. :)
Thanks very much. :)
Not many positives to this book. It was short, not short enough. Would have preferred chapters to divide up each letter. Read the first letter quicker than the second. Just found it too repetitive and not very interesting. Was seriously considering burying it in the snow during the second letter. I always like to finish a book, no matter how long it takes me or how little it interests me. That's another one of the 1001 reads down.
I'm going to save this for a 1001 Book Box I'm putting together. Hoping to have it travelling some time in the Spring.
