Well, it was a quick read. :) I had heard vaugely somewhere of the old Alaskan Indian practice of leaving behind the elderly to die when times got hard, and understood how it would be necessary, but Velma Wallis helps make that time come to life and show how it is not really needed, and the value that elderly people still have to the next generation.

Reserved for the next reader.

I received this 2 days ago -- sorry so long to journal. I'm looking forward to reading this as I am fascinated by all things to do with Alaska. Thanks for starting the bookray, mirp!

Although I would have liked for this book to have more detail at times, it managed to be both troubling and inspiring at the same time. It certainly makes you think about the way we treat older people in our society. Without giving too much away, I think one of my new mottoes (adapted from the book) for difficult times in my life, will be "Let me die trying."

Thanks, mirp, for starting this ray, and it'll be going on to Secretariat as soon as I get the address and time to go to P.O.

This book made it safely to California. I see that after it left the Emerald Isle it's been ping ponging all over the states. I'm finishing another book, but will get to this one within the week. Then it'll be on its way to Denmark.

I enjoyed this re-telling of an ancient Alaskan story of two women who have only themselves to rely on in the wilderness. I think it's very true that we often convince ourselves that we can't do something we've been doing for years just because we've gotten older. I appreciated that the old women refused to be helped too much by the tribe after their ordeal because they didn't want to lose their skills and energy again.

This is on its way to Denmark today.

Yay! Just when I was starting to get confused about what to read this book came. And thanks for the postcard, Secretariat. Even spring had cheated us here now. The last two days have offered rain and even sleet and it´s almost june! It´s so unfair *lol*

It´s only been a few hours since I received the book and I´ve already finished it. It was a nice and very interesting story with lots of things to get you thinking. I think a lot of people - in many different ways - become indolent and perhaps don´t see the strengths and possibilities they hold within them. I think this story is a good example of just that and what happens when it gets out of hand.

Arrived today. Thanks pelikanol. :)

A short read, but quite challenging.

It made me consider the way that old people are treated, and that sometimes younger people treat them as though they are invisible, or useless.

It also made me realise that although I am only 39, there are already things that I don't do anymore, because I consider myself too old.

PMing Flakes for the next mailing address.
