I'm not quite sure why enjoyed this book so much. There were a lot of reasons why I shouldn't, chief among them that the author had done a lot of reading but not much understanding of the fields he was writing about — for example, he (or one of the characters) talks at length about the structure of buckminsterfullerene but then gives the substance properties which are at odds with that structure. There are similar holes in the anthropology.

Add to that a fairly well-trodden plot path (the discovery of Atlantis demonstrates that the world is about to end unless people do something in the next week) and you'd be forgiven for thinking that it would be a very poor novel.

But despite all of that, it's a riveting story. It's well paced and the plot has an energy that doesn't slow up throughout what is quite a thick book.

I've passed the book on to a colleague who looked interested in it and I've asked him to leave it somewhere interesting when he's done with it.
