Quite a comical read. The trials and tribulations of living in a small town. Won the Pulitzer prize too!
I read it quickly--a good summer read.

Releasing this to quinnsmom in a trade. A good read- not sure if it is deserving of a Pulitzer Prize, but still, it kept me entertained from page to page.

Empire Falls is a Maine town, in its earlier days bustling with activity from various enterprises all owned by the Whiting family, which happened to own most of the town as well. When the story begins, Francine Whiting and her daughter Cindy are what's left of the family. C.B., Francine's husband, has done away with himself, leaving Francine to flex her "power and control" muscles over most everyone in Empire Falls, including Miles Roby, the main character in the story. He runs the Empire Grill, also owned by Francine Whiting. There is a group of other characters, but unlike most authors, they are not banished to the sidelines, but given very full lives & developed very well.

The story will draw you in. It is told as a mix of activity in the present and flashbacks which lead to the central motivations in this novel. There are several subplots going on around the central one -- but all are related to Miles Roby & his relationship with the Whiting family.

Empire Falls is tragic but at times funny, and I couldn't help but be impressed with the way in which the author brought life into the characters and into the town itself.

This is a book I would recommend to everyone.

I aslo enjoyed this book. Having grown up in a small town in Maine myself, some of the interactions were all too familiar. The story builds slowly until you are part of the small town of Empire Falls & waiting to see what will happen next. By the end I couldn't put it down.

It was easy to see why this got a Pulitzer. The situation and characters are told with such simple elegance as to create a real world.
DH wants to read this before I release it.

Got the book while waiting to get my car fixed. Read the prologue. Great. Took it home to read the "rest of the story". Will take it back where I found it or leave it where you can find it.
