Little Altars Everywhere: A Novel

Like "Ya-Ya Sisterhood" so much, picked this up to give it a try.
Here are the Ya-Yas, all grown up: looney Louisiana toons. The story focuses on the family of Vivinne and Shep Walker, which can only be described as being joyously dysfunctional. When I choose to use the word "joyous", what comes to mind is a quote from a wonderful old physics teacher. "being ignorant, and delighting in it, is like a dog wallowing in its own vomit". Never forgot that quote. While this is light reading, I personally don't enjoy reading about alcoholics, who are so self-absorbed they blindly abuse their children, without a thought to the ramifications. I am probably taking the book too seriously, but there you have it.

I have read only half of this book as it comes to close to chicklit in my opinion (and I don't like to read chicklit). I was irritated by the alcohol abuse, the misbehaving of the ya-ya's and especially these sentences on page 5: 'you have to start early if you plan to be popular. Mama understands the gospel of popularity and she is passing it on to me so I won't be left out on the fringes.' It made me want to put the book down right away, now I got stranded at page 118!
I kind of decided to skip 'The devine secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood until I read hotflash's journal entries. She didn't like this book very much either (is my interpretation) and did like the Ya-Ya sisterhood. I'll think about it some more...

I hunted this book down at the OBCZ in Amsterdam. I really liked Wells' other book, perfect bedtime reading, and I am curious to know if this one can live up that. Looking forward to reading it.
