Schindler's List

Fictionalized account of Oskar Schindler's efforts to save Jews from the maelstrom of the Holocaust. Basis for Spielberg's movie.
Thomas Keneally's novelization of Oskar Schindler's experiences during World War II show how one man's efforts saved approximately 1300 Jews from the insatiable maw of the Holocaust. He depicts Schindler warts and all, revealing how he was only human.
The book that inspired Steven Spielberg's dark masterpiece follows how Schindler's conscience is gradually awakened to the madness and evil around him, and the efforts he goes through to protect the workers in his factory, greasing the paws of SS men and German bureaucrats. The famous list does not appear until late in the book, but without an extensive exploration of the background and the characters involved it would be meaningless.
"Schindler's List" helped make a man who might otherwise have been no more than a footnote in 20th century history come to light and receive the recognition for his supreme acts of goodness and courage that he deserves. Oskar Schindler defied ultimate evil to save hundreds of innocent people, and paid dearly for his kindness.
Much of the book is dark and unsettling, and Amon Goeth is one of the vilest villains in all literature; Keneally establishes his foul character entirely with his deeds and talk and makes him thoroughly hateful without having to call him an evildoer. He is all the worse when one considers that he was an actual person. However, in the midst of all the horror is the shining light of Schindler and his factory that becomes a refuge for otherwise doomed people.
An inspiring and fascinating novel.

Mailed as a RABCK
I've wanted to read this book for some time. I have not seen the film version yet either. I tend to get very depressed and emotional when reading accounts of this terrible part of world history. I would like to tackle this book though. Many thanks to cyberkedi for the RABCK!

Taken from the "Empty my bookshelf" bookbox.
What incredible people to have survived this. This book is supposed to fictionalized (I didn't realize it at first), but Schindler really knew how to play the political system to keep his workers alive.
Being sent to Tribefan so he can include it in the Akron, Ohio book festival.
This didn't make it into the box for Tribefan, so it's going into the ABC bookbox.
Chosen from the ABC Book Box. Thanks for including, it I've wanted to read it for years.
