This is the third or fourth title by Hazel Gaynor I have read and I really enjoyed this story. As with the other books of hers, this is historical fiction, based on true events. Gaynor does meticulous research and bring to life historical events they are not necessarily in the mainstream or well-known.

This dual timeline story tells of women lighthouse keepers, a traditionally male domain. It tells the story of Grace Darling, who, along with her father in 1838, helped to rescue a handful of passengers whose ship was wrecked in a terrible storm off the coast of England. She became what could be called a *media sensation* of the time and it didn't sit well with her. Her name is forgotten and unknown today but Gaynor takes the facts of her story and imagines the real life behind the *celebrity*.

The 1938 timeline follows an unwed pregnant Irish girl, Matilda Emmerson, as she is sent off to America by her parents, to avoid bringing shame to the family. She is sent to a relative in Newport, Rhode Island and the books alternates between the two women's stories, culminating, at the end, in how they intertwine.

I found this a compelling read and look forward to reading more by Hazel Gaynor.
