When Hirsch heads up Bitter Wash Road in rural South Australia to investigate reports of gunfire, he finds himself cut off. A pair of thrill killers has been targeting farmhouses on lonely backroads, but Hirsch's first thought is maybe 'back-up' is nearby - and about to put a bullet in him. That's because Hirsch is a whistleblower. Formerly a promising officer, he has now been demoted and exiled to a one-cop station in South Australia's wheatbelt. The truth turns out to be a more mundane. And the events that then unfold are a hell of a lot more sinister.

Paul ‘Hirsch’ Hirschhausen is a whistle blower, once a promising detective, he is sent to a one cop station in South Australia’s wheatbelt. While the investigation into his boss and colleagues continues in Adelaide Hirsch is settling in to the small town of a Tiverton. His new boss, Sergeant Kropp, based in Redruth, sends him out to investigate gunshots out on Bitter Wash Road, and then he gets another call, a body has been found by the side of the road. It is a 16 year old girl, Melia Donovan, her death is declared a hit and run, but Hirsch is suspicious. When another woman is found dead, it looks like suicide, but Hirsch is not convinced. A gritty, clever plot out in Australian farming country, definitely worth a read.

Thank you kkslibrary for passing this one on! I read the second instalment of this series not that long ago and also have the third one so will backtrack in time with this one over the Summer break to get back in order. Perfect beach read!
UPDATE 30/12/22 I think this first instalment is as good if not better - couldn't put it down. Disher is such a fine and effective writer. Can't wait for the third one now!

I'm glad I picked up this gritty Aussie crime series by Garry Disher featuring the demoted whistleblowing Constable Paul Hirsch banished from Adelaide police to the remote backwaters of a small town Tiverton
