I got this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's about a girl whose free-spirited mother has died, leaving her and her more strait-laced father to get by as best they can. Her father, a professional arborist, buys a decaying apple orchard in a remote community and takes Evie there - very much against her will - in hopes of a new start, but it's immediately apparent that there's something very, very wrong with the orchard and the land and even the nearby town. And when Evie spies a lone, pale boy standing apart from a funeral in the cemetery next to the house, she's sure she's seeing ghosts now!
As if that weren't enough, the late owner of the house has bequeathed a box containing one seed - to Evie, though she never met him. But the seed raises magical hopes in Evie, and eventually she and Alex - the ghost-boy from the cemetery - decide to plant it in the middle of the orchard and see what happens.
The story deals with magic real and imagined, with love and loss, grief and recovery - and it includes some plot twists that may surprise some readers. Nicely evocative, if sometimes rather unnerving!
