1763: Auf der Karibikinsel Saint Dominique kauft ein Schweizer Offizier die schöne Sklavin Marguerite frei. Er nimmt sie mit nach Bern auf den alten Patriziersitz der Familie. Dort bringt Marguerite den kleinen, »pißgelben Bastard« zur Welt, von dem niemand wissen darf, wer sein Vater ist. Lukas Hartmann erzählt die Geschichte der Mohrin mit den Augen des Kindes und macht einen »kleinen Wilden« zum Seismographen einer bigotten und engherzigen Welt. Aus dieser Unmittelbarkeit gewinnt der Roman seine Überzeugungskraft.
