Received as a Christmas present. Didn't think I would like it but I am really enjoying it so far.

A gritty novel set in a slum area of Manchester in the late 1930s. The story focuses on a young and feisty Elsie Grimshaw (until she becomes Elsie Tanner) about 20 years before the famous soap begins its long running series on the famous cobbles of Coronation Street. This was such a good read, it really surprised me. I love the soap series (the only soap I watch now) but I have a special affection for the early years of Corrie and it amuses me that when Elsie learns to cycle down Coronation Street with her first boyfriend she thinks that the street looks very posh! But compared to her current squalid living conditions, that many people endured in those times, it probably was!

I am gad to see that this book is actually the first in a series of Coronation Street books set during WW2 so I look forward to following the series (but probably on my kindle next).
