I found this softcover in some bags of books left by the Little Free Library in Lincoln Park, Nashua. Will be passing the books along to various LFLs when circumstances permit.

I first read this book a decade or so ago, shortly after I'd gotten hooked on Pratchett's Discworld books courtesy of rave reviews on BookCrossing. While this wasn't the first Discworld book I read - that honor goes to Guards! Guards!, which I think may be a better starting point anyway - I did find this one very entertaining; it's a pastiche on a whole slew of fantasy-novel conventions, from the opening scene in which a pair of brigands, Bravd and The Weasel (any resemblance to Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser is undoubtedly quite intentional!), encounter Rincewind, the most cowardly (and inept) wizard in the history of the Discworld, who's traveling in the company of Twoflower, a sort of ur-tourist, and his wonderful, terrifying Luggage. Further adventures bring Rincewind in strictly involuntary contact with hideous Lovecraftian monstrosities, dragons and their skimpy-leather-outfit-wearing riders, and a trip off the edge of the Discworld...

I enjoyed this book (and The Light Fantastic, the second Discworld book and the continued adventures of Rincewind), although I suspect that someone who did not have an extensive background in fantasy novels, movies, and/or role-playing games would find much of it puzzling at best. And while I wouldn't suggest this as the starting point in the Discworld books, I do think it's an entertaining read - and as Rincewind and the Luggage go on to star in many more Discworld books, it's nice to have read their "origin" story first!

[I was amused to see this book featured in this Unshelved Book Club comic strip; check it out! There's also a TV Tropes page on the book. And there was a modestly entertaining 2008 TV-movie adaptation of this and The Light Fantastic, though I wasn't thrilled with some of the casting.]
