Book Description
Christopehr Moore has pioneered a parade of loopy, hilarious genres that have delighted readers world-wide. The comically demonic horror novel. The yuppie-meets-shaman New Age Western. The California vampire love story. The South Seas adventure novel on acid. Now the maestro of the bizarre brings you his most incredible creation yet-a love story starring a sea monster named Steve. It's "Godzilla" meets "The Bridges of Madison County", as only Christopher Moore could spin it.
It's September in Pine Cove, California, where the tourists have finally decamped for the season, the sun is slanting through the trees, and the local psychiatrist has just decided to switch everyone from antidepressants to placebos without telling them. Suddenly, business is booming at the Head of the Slug Saloon, where a melancholy blues man from the Mississippi Delta has settled in for the winter. Unfortunately for the town's newly minted blues fans, however, a colossal sea beast is also drawn to the sound of the slide guitar. When a tanker truck explodes at the local gas station, it's the first sign that all hell is about to break loose in Pine Cove.

Can the unlikely constable Theophilus Crowe curb his gonzo appetites long enough to find out who--or what--is behind the explosion and the resulting series of mysterious crimes? Can Molly Michon, the has-been scream queen and resident crazy lady, control her dual personalities? Can anyone explain why a town so morose is suddenly so...libidinous? And what's the story behind the mysterious trailer that has just shown up in the back corner of the local trailer park?

Wildly original and ferociously funny, The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove has enough crazy twists to give anyone a personality disorder-and keep them in the throes of convulsive laughter at the same time. So here I am, minding my own business, when there is a chime from the doorbell.

"It's another one", my absolutely lovely mail carrier says to me as she hands me a shoebox sized package.

"Good Grief!", I exclaim. "I was expecting a book, not a box!". Pam the postal carrier laughed, and said, "I've learned you bookcrossers are an extremely generous group." That the woman could still love us after carrying the parcel up our 15 steps to our front porch shows what a great lady she is.

So now I have in my possession this book and a number of other books sent by the ever amazing Bren. I will divvy these out- to Bumma, OBCZs and some to the high school class of bookcrosser leeann347. One or two I may keep to read myself, and this particular book will be read and passed along in the ring. I am almost finished the ring just before this, so it shouldn't be too long. I promise.

Thank you BrynnSC, for starting this ring. I look forward to reading it.

Pictured one of our South Carolina cypress swamps- I think it is the one where Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed. One good beast deserves another.
And if you read this before November 3 2004, why not consider entering a picture in the Show Us Your Town challenge. Or vote on an entry by that date. Either way the pictures are very fun!

Where to start? Where to start?

This was my maiden dip into Christopher Moore, who should get a Pulitzer for his titles alone! Who can pass up a title like this?

Totally improbable, quirky, witty and twisted. My kind of humor.

From the tale of the Bluesman CAtfish Jefferson, to poor Steve the Sea Monster, looking for love in all the wrong fuel trucks, to Molly and her narrator, the story just flowed. I loved the way Moorse chose to describe things-
ie "It wasn't that their (the townpeople) anxiety was gone, but rather that it ran off their backs like warm rain off a naked toddler who had just discovered the splash and magic of mud". Or Moore's creative if somewhat unorthodox use of a weed wacker. Or of Skinner the dog's perspective of life "Danger, Food Guy! Danger."

Anyhow, I guess you can gather that I liked it and intend to read more Moore in the future. PMing the next in the ring for thier address.

Thank you BrynnSC

Forgot to say I'd popped this in the mail to MattyH. Going media. I also went out and bought Lamb. Like I need another book in my TBR pile. Good Grief!

Thanks so much - can't wait to read it (but that's true of my whole TBR stack...)

What a fun read! The ending was a little quick for my taste, I could have enjoyed it going on a little longer, but a truly original story. On its way to CheriePie next.

Received today. This is my 3rd Moore book (the others being Practical Demonkeeping and Bloodsucking Fiends) and I'm looking forward to reading this one too. I should be starting on it shortly.

Another hit by Chris Moore! Though this book isn't really a follow-up to Practical Demonkeeping, it does have a few of the same characters, and makes reference to the events that happened in that book. Though if you plan to read Practical Demonkeeping and haven't yet, this book is different enough, and doesn't really give away the plot of the other, that it shouldn't matter if you read them out of order.

That said, I found this book funny and engrossing and hard to put down. Like his other books, the characters are wacky and the situations they find themselves in laughable. He has a knack for making the extraordinary seem ordinary, bringing it into the "normal" lives of everyday people. My hubby Mike wants to read this too, having looked at the cover and read the back, and he's not even much of a book person, but since it's part of ring, I'll simply ask Brynn if she can send it back to me when the ring's done so I can let Mike read it without worrying about holding up the ring.

This will be going out to SandDanz by the end of the week, along with a little something extra I promised to send her. ;) I'll make another note here when it leaves my house as I'll probably add a stamps.com delivery confirmation to it.

Received in today's mail (which could've been Thursday or Friday's mail actually, but since we didn't have mail due to the 9" of snow...)

Anyway... I'm going to try to read "Practical Demonkeeping" real quick before starting this one, but I'll get to it ASAP!!!

Oh, Brynn hun... you need to update where the book is. You never marked it as having arrived with Cherie. *giggles*

Love ya girl! *hugs*

Absolutely marvelous!!! I thought "Practical Demonkeeping" was great until I read this book... I didn't know Christopher Moore could get more funny! I don't think I'll ever think of a weed whacker the same again. I'm still having problems deciding which character was my favorite in this book. I laughed a lot harder at the characters in this book than the first one. The pharmacist kept me giggling, but he didn't grow on me as much as some of the others even at that.

Anyway, I suck at reviews, but everyone should read this book just to see how funny it is!

I'll get this sent off to squirrel818 on my next trip to the PO... should be early next week! :)

Edited to add book rating... I forgot!
