The heroine is a dissatisfied housewife with the ridiculous name of Dellarobia.
She lives with two children and husband on a farm in Appalachia in the fictive hamlet of Feathertown. Dellarobia got into this marriage by accident (pregnant in high school) and asks herself, why she didn't leave her simpleton of a husband after she miscarried the first baby. In her life and especially in Feathertown there is not much to look forward to: a supermarket and a church, the sermon and the Sunday congregations. Dellarobia starts a fling with a young, good looking service man from the telephone company and secretly hikes to her tryst up to the old hunter's cabin. That's when she discovers the Monarch butterflies, millions, covering all the trees in the valley. The pious people of Feathertown take it as a miracle of God.

The story needs time to take off, but with the reasonable voice of lepidopterist Dr. Byron it started to be interesting. I suddenly could engage in the dumb, quotidian details of Dellarobia's life and how she stumbles into a life-altering journey of conscience. Not only climate change is at hand, but the heroine's eventually successful attempts to change her life, to swap the cage of marriage with the freedom of autonomy and uncertainty.

The climate issue is of course the serious background of this family story, but Kingsolver doesn't rub it in. Very subtle and logical she only hints, her base is science, not environmentists' fight. This is an enthralling, comprehensible novel about climat change; everybody who scorns at Greta should at least try to read this book.
