I purchased this book because it is set in Barbados. I am currently participating in an "around the world" reading challenge and I thought this might be good for that. I have an old friend who is from Barbados (she was quite young when her family came here), so it is perhaps more interesting to me as a setting than some places might be. I have a bit of a surplus of North America books, so I don't actually know if I will read this for my challenge or not, but I'm sure I will read it sometime either way!

Well, I didn't read this for my Around the World challenge back in 2019, but I'm doing that same challenge in 2021 and I have now read it for this year's challenge instead.

All in all, this is a book that I'm glad to have read. It's a coming-of-age story that, unfortunately, I could relate to in some ways-- though mercifully not in all of them. There were parts of this that I had some trouble reading for content reasons, but generally speaking I liked the author's style of writing (I thought there were some very good lines in this book) and I enjoyed the aspects of Bajan culture.
