This novel was published in 1931 and belongs to the must read classics. It dramatizes family life in a Chinese village in the early 20th century, won the Pulitzer prize and was number one bestseller for two years. Buck, who grew up in China as the daughter of missionaries, wrote the book while living in China and drew on her first-hand observation. The realistic and sympathetic depiction of the Chinese farmer family influenced Americans to consider China as ally in the upcoming war with Japan.
However, the life of the Chinese women was incredibly limited ... for example they still bound and crippled the feet of little girls, to endow them with desireable lotus feet (and lifelong walking pains).
