One night, soon after the Battle of Britain, three very different women find themselves sharing an attic bedrooom in the remote Hallows Farm and beginning their spell as land girls. They are Prue, a giddy apprentice hairdresser from Manchester, Stella, a Surrey girl newly in love; and Ag, the pensive Cambridge graduate from East Anglia. They have been sent to work for John and Faith Lawrence on their farm in the West Country. Joe, the farmer's son, unable to fight due to asthma, is safely engaged to a sparking plug tester in the WAAF.
