The Talented Mr. Ripley

From the cover -
In a chilling literary hall of mirrors, Patricia Highsmith introduces Tom Ripley. Like a latter-day Henry James hero, he is sent to Italy with the commission to coax Dickie Greenleaf back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of this prodigal young American. He wants to be like him - exactly like him. Suave, agreeable, and utterly amoral, Ripley stops at nothing - certainly not only one murder - to accomplish his goal.
Highsmith's prose is concise and controlled, just like her protagonist. Ripley starts out unsure of himself, unhappy with his life, but as he spends time with Dickie, comes to believe he deserves the fine life even more than Greenleaf. The scariest thing about this tale is that Tom tells himself his fictions so much, he comes to believe it really happened the way he remembers. A truly terrifying sociopath. I've now had to add the other 4 books to my wishlist (Ripley Under Ground, Ripley's Game, The Boy who Followed Ripley, and Ripley Under Water).
This will be reserved for the DC con in the spring, as it's a 1001 book.

Note: I was in the middle of reading this when I heard of my dear friend MaryZee's death. Given how generous she was with books (and everything else, really), it's not all that surprising - statistically - that she'd registered my current read. Thanks for the good book, Mary; I'll be sure to pass it along to someone else.
