This is registration #20, 2nd batch, for the BC Anniversary/Race to a Million challenge.

From the cover -
In a chilling literary hall of mirrors, Patricia Highsmith introduces Tom Ripley. Like a latter-day Henry James hero, he is sent to Italy with the commission to coax Dickie Greenleaf back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of this prodigal young American. He wants to be like him - exactly like him. Suave, agreeable, and utterly amoral, Ripley stops at nothing - certainly not only one murder - to accomplish his goal.

Don't know why it took me so long to finally read this book; it's wonderful, and a quick read too (always a plus, given the size of Mt. TBR).

Highsmith's prose is concise and controlled, just like her protagonist. Ripley starts out unsure of himself, unhappy with his life, but as he spends time with Dickie, comes to believe he deserves the fine life even more than Greenleaf. The scariest thing about this tale is that Tom tells himself his fictions so much, he comes to believe it really happened the way he remembers. A truly terrifying sociopath. I've now had to add the other 4 books to my wishlist (Ripley Under Ground, Ripley's Game, The Boy who Followed Ripley, and Ripley Under Water).

This will be reserved for the DC con in the spring, as it's a 1001 book.

This is a 1001 book, and will be left on the BookCrossers only book buffet table. Enjoy!

This was left on the BookCrossers-only book buffet at the 2011 BookCrossing Convention in Washington, DC. I plan to continue its journey via bookray or RABCK.

...but not until after I've read it. Thanks, MaryZee!

Tom Ripley is sent to Europe to find Dickie Greenleaf and convince him to come home to his parents. The men were acquaintances once upon a time, and Dickie's father, at the end of his rope, finances Ripley's trip. Instead of admitting that the two barely remember each other, Ripley slowly inserts himself into Dickie's life, ultimately deciding that he, Tom Ripley, is more deserving of such a life. The ensuing series of close calls and further deceptions makes for quite the suspenseful read. I kept turning the page, wanting to see how Ripley would get out of this particular scrape, and whether, in the end, his caper would succeed. Definitely recommended if you like (somewhat disturbing) psychological thrillers.

Note: I was in the middle of reading this when I heard of my dear friend MaryZee's death. Given how generous she was with books (and everything else, really), it's not all that surprising - statistically - that she'd registered my current read. Thanks for the good book, Mary; I'll be sure to pass it along to someone else.
