I haven’t seen the movie, but picked up the book because a friend recently watched and enjoyed it on a plane trip.
The book didn’t grab me right away, but once I got used to the writing style, it became engrossing. I loved the Hawai’i setting. A serious story with some humor, mostly in the form of “one-liners” that sneak up on you when you least expect them!
Attorney Matthew King’s family descends from Hawaiian royalty, and they own a great deal of land, the disposition of which will soon have to be agreed upon by members of said extended family. Matt’s wife, Joanie, lies in a coma after a boating accident, and she will not recover.
The story centers around the decision to take Joanie off life support, and the disagreements about what to do with the land. To complicate matters, Matt learns that Joanie was having an affair and planning to leave him. How he handles this is, understandably, a large part of the plot. Matt’s teenage daughter, Alex, is a recovering addict and has been living on another island in a supervised facility. Younger daughter Scottie (age 10) is developing some very strange quirks and for most of the book I found her character rather disturbing. But the show-stealer is Alex’s friend Sid, a very strange young man with his own issues, who nevertheless has a certain wisdom.
This book made me think about love, forgiveness, and end-of-life issues.
