I got this good-condition softcover from Better World Books, for another release copy.

I'd read and enjoyed several of Thompson's gritty noir-type novels, and this one's a classic. It's narrated by the main character, a small-town sheriff who's also a sociopath - hence the title - and it's very, very chilling. [This character, while able to put on an affable mask, does not have the same charm for me as another literary sociopath, The Talented Mr. Ripley, though I certainly wouldn't want to get on the bad side of either of them {wry grin}.]

This was filmed a couple of times; the 1976 version starred Stacy Keach, and the 2010 version stars Casey Affleck. I haven't seen either, so I can't recommend one over the other...

I left this book, bagged against the elements, on a bench on Littleton Common on this cold day, while in the area doing a multi-stage geocache; hope someone enjoys the book!
