This book starts its journey with Book Crossing from Delphi, Greece
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" 'A little whitewashed house with a blue door and blue shutters on an unspoilt island in a picturesque village next to the beach with a tavern round the corner...' This was the dream of the Mole family in search of a piece of Greek paradise. But a beautiful view and a persuasive local prompted the impulsive purchase of 'a tumbledown ruin on a hillside with no water, no electricity, no roof, no floor, no doors, no windows and twenty years of goat dung...' In a charming saga of sun sea, sand - and cement - John Mole tells of the back-breaking but joyous labours of fixing up his own Arcadia and introduces a warm, generous and garrulous cast of characters who helped (and occasionally hindered) his progress. "
I bought an other copy of the first edition of this book several years ago from a bookstore on Naxos Town, Naxos, Cyclades, Greece and I remember I enjoyed it a lot. I had read it a couple of times since then but not very recently to offer a detailed review. John Mole describes a Greece that on many aspects is now long gone while in others is still alive and unchanged. He describes the beautiful setting and he narrates his difficulties to build his house, convince his family to follow him, how they tried to adapt to the local scene and foreign culture and to blend with the locals and so on... And while this is nothing new on travel or ex-pat memoirs, the difference with this book is that the author is doing so on a very witty, humorous way which makes reading a real pleasure.
Last fall I was ordering a few books online and I noticed a more recent edition of the book, containing a new chapter. So I bought two copies, one for my permanent collection and one for BookCrossing purposes. I didn't find time to read this updated edition yet, but anyway, here it is and I'm sharing it with the world : )
I hope future readers will enjoy this book and let me know about it!
I'll now set it free to trot the globe and make many new friends : )
