The Paper Menagerie is a brilliant and imaginative short story about origami animals in the midst of other excellent stories in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, time travel, history and more, each one a gem. The titles are not enticing: The Bookmaking habits of select species, Simulacrum, An advanced readers' picture book of comparative cognition... and might trick the reader into thinking they are obtuse and difficult, but no - they are all understandable, intelligent and believable. The last story, The Man who Ended History, is unbearable and left me shaking; I knew nothing about this Unit 731 where the Japanese tortured Chinese prisoners, but is worth reading for its provocative premise that one can travel back in time to a particular moment and witness what happened, though the process cancels out that same historical moment... much food for thought.
