"Entrancing. The writing is a delight, the story itself so touching that I didn't want it to end. I really loved this book." (Michael Bond, creater of Paddington Bear)

"On holiday in Uruguay, Tom Mitchell rescues a penguin from an oil slick, only to find that the bird then refuses to leave his side. Tom has little choice but to smuggle his new companion across the border, through customs and into Argentina, where he teaches in a boy's boarding school."

This looks a lovely little story just down my alley. Although smuggling animals is a big NO-NO for me, having seen all sorts of consequences of that.

As it happens I won two copies of this book from the sweeps, but alas, Penguins equal Releanna, the best tourist guide in Vienna. I asked her and she would very much like to read this book. I can also come back here and comment what I thought of the book when I've read the other copy.

Edit July 2017: I've read the book and Juan Salvador was a really special bird, I have to say. And I liked the storytelling as well.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

They say penguins don't fly, so let's see how long it takes this penguin to travel to Austria. And guess what?! I happened to find my Christmas letter 2016 to Releanna, so with luck she will receive it around Easter. Well, it is a Christ-related holiday as well, so perhaps she won't realize the letter is over three months late...

Journal Entry 6 by Releanna at Wien Bezirk 23 - Liesing, Wien Austria on Wednesday, March 29, 2017
thank you, kirjakko, for this lovely book (I also think smuggling animals is a big NO, but it looks like a nice story), the Linux-bookmark and your lovely letter.
This penguin seems to have had a very fast journey, only two days :o
So your bad luck that Easter is late this year, but I loved your Christmas letter!
I plan to reply but as I'm just as old and slow as you seem to be it'll probably be a nice summer reading for you!

Journal Entry 7 by Releanna at Wien Bezirk 23 - Liesing, Wien Austria on Friday, November 24, 2017
kirjakko: I didn't say which summer I'll write a letter to you, did I? Needless to say it didn't happen this year. Sorry!

As to the book: yes, it is a enjoyable book, nicely written!

Journal Entry 10 by wingsheepettewing at Totton and Eling, Hampshire United Kingdom on Sunday, September 23, 2018
I have just finished this book. what a lovely story. I'm not sure about keeping a penguin on a terrace but it seemed to work.

I have a couple of friends who'd like to read this next.

thank you for sharing it with me.

My brother who rarely reads, read this, he wants to know, why no-one thinks it's strange this man has a penguin?

Thank you Sheepette

I don’t think my home could accommodate a penguin in. Tom’s story in rescuing a penguin from an environmental disaster is endearing. Smuggling and blackmail in succession of one another is quite something. Penguins on balconies, I’m not so sure of.

To be released soon

Wow! What a story!

The story is very well written. And it was so interesting to read about how the penguin adapts to the new way of life and how it helps others, especially Danny, the homesick boy that doesn't do very well at school and struggles in sports as well.
