I would have loved to subscribe to this new serial from Eaglemoss, but the cost was ridiculous. But the nice, cheap first issue was well within my reach. Looking forward to having a read.

This is an omnibus edition of four original comics that made up a prequel to the new Star Trek film, plus a two part story from the 60's.

'Countdown' shows how the Romulan, Nero, came to hate Spock and chased him back in time after Romulus is destroyed by an exploding star. At first they work together to try and stop the catastrophe, both Vulcans and Romulans refuse to co-operate, with horrendous results.

I liked the introduction of other much-loved characters, like Data, Picard and Geordie - and I could hear their voices as I read the printed words, which is always a good sign that the writers have got it right. And the majority of the artwork was good too.

'The Planet of No Return' isn't so successful. The introduction explains how old it is and why not all the 'facts' are correct, so although Spock, McCoy and Kirk have a staring role, it's hard to recognise them. There's none of the Federation diplomacy here - the away team happily blast away at the 'cannibal' plants, even after they realise they are intelligent - and Spock suggests that the whole planet is blown up to stop those nasty space spores from spreading. Definitely showing it's age, but worth the read anyway to see what Star Trek could have become - shudder!
