Journal Entry 10 by AmberMoon from Hull, East Yorkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 10, 2005
This was a very well written book. I enjoyed it tremendously.
Like a Brooklyn fairytale, it offers all the usual "once upon a time" trimmings - the oppressed, the oppressors, true evil and pure good.
It also portrays some bitter realisms.
Anyone who is confused by the prejudices that plague this world would benefit from reading this.
I hope to have my own copy someday.

Sending to next person in bookray - Wyldewomin.

What a fantastic book! I'd been wanting to read this for quite a while, but never got the chance before now. I started it last night and could barely put it down long enough to get a little shut-eye. The relationship between the shabbos goy and rabbi is so deep and touching, it made me laugh and smile and weep.

Thank you for sharing!!

Sending off tomorrow!

Journal Entry 13 by buffra from Columbus, Ohio USA on Saturday, September 3, 2005
I got home from a little time away and found this lurking in my mailbox! Thanks!

I'm looking forward to it and hoping to keep it moving quickly. It's next on my list to read.

Journal Entry 14 by buffra from Columbus, Ohio USA on Tuesday, September 13, 2005
This is the story of a Catholic boy coming of age in Brooklyn in a tumultuous time. The world is changing around him. No longer can people be divided simply into Catholic and Protestant, Irish and Italian. Suddenly, through a chance encounter and a violent neighborhood thug, Michael becomes aware of his Jewish neighbors. Not only is he suddenly aware of the “different,” but he is also made heartbreakingly aware of the violent hatred that can be aroused by those that are different. As the seasons pass, Michael learns a great deal about himself and the world around him. He struggles to make sense of what had once seemed so simple and to find his place among friends who suddenly aren’t. The neighborhood dramas Michael is experiencing are also playing out on the large scale as Jackie Robinson begins his first season in the nationals. Pete Hamill tells the touching story of a Catholic altar boy who is also a Shabbat goy, a rabbi who wants to learn English and baseball, a struggle for faith and understanding in the face of humanity’s inhumanity, and an ancient legend that can be called upon to bring peace if only you believe.

I loved this book. I have recommended it to my parents, too. I read it in a day, but then real life reared its head and it took me over a week to mail! (a more detailed journal entry hopes to follow!)

It's now on its way (airmail) to loveamystery.
