Velma Wallis was born in Ft. Yukon, a remote village in Interior Alaska, and now her family divides their time among Fairbanks, Fort Yukon, and traditional hunting, fishing, and trapping grounds. Wallis's books are based on the Athabaskan stories her mother told her when she was growing up.
Rooted in the legends of Alaska's Athabaskan Indians, this novel of two rebels teaches that the search for individualism often comes at a high price but can be the foundation for finding true wisdom. When Bird Girl, an independent young hunter, is ordered to marry and conform to her tribe's traditional role for women, she decides instead to leave the tribe. The other rebel, a young man named Daagoo, is a restless dreamer who leaves Alaska to journey south in search of the legendary Land of the Sun. Following their hearts, Bird Girl and Dagoo wander far from their culture's deeply held traditions and eventually must find a way to come home again.

This surprising little book "Bird Girl" is being mailed to marulaPL in Poland along with "Two Women". Both books were written by Velma Wallis, a wonderful native Alaskan author. The books are based on tribal legends told to Velma by her mother. A different read.
