A very entertaining collection of fiction and nonfiction stories about the West and the people who settled it. It includes tales of lost gold mining treasures, portraits of Native American culture, the coming of the railroad, conflicts between farmers and ranchers, and all sorts of facets of life in the American West from the earliest years of its discovery by Europeans. Best of all is a letter from a thirteen year old survivor of the Donner Party's doomed attempt to cross the Sierras in the winter.
