The career of Miles Vorkosigan's mother. Wonderful story, and actually 2 novels in one.

In Shards of Honor, we first meet Cordelia Naismith as a Survey Captain of the Beta fleet. She is caught on planet, with a gravely injured man after a skirmish breaks out with a Barrayaran Fleet. Of course, as Survey Captains are strong, resourceful and exemplary in all actions... Instead this turns into a nuanced tale of conflicting loyalties in everyday life. What do you owe your comrades? your planet? your fellow combatants/prisoners....

The second part, Barrayar Cordelia resurfaces as married to her 'dear enemy,' booted out of the Barrayaran Fleet in a politcal payment for Barrayar losing the Betan war. But civil war erupts on Barrayar, and Cordelia is once again forced to balance loyalties as she strives to save her premature son, who is adrift somewhere in an incubator with grave damages inflicted by a poison that signaled the first shot of the war.

Fly far little book!
