This is a second book of a trilogy but reads well on its' own. Tells the story of the Manth people whose home is suddenly ransacked and pillaged in a raid, with all the surviving Manth forced marched to join the Mastery...... and branded as slaves. Kestral hides in the wind-singer tower and watches and evades capture but then follows the route taken and joins with another procession containing a wedding party, also going to the Mastery. After several deceptions, the surviving Manth leave the Mastery to fill the final prophecy.
