From Amazon:

The Slaves of Solitude is set in a wartime boarding house in a small town on the Thames. The Rosamund Tea Rooms is an oppressive place, as grey and lonely as its residents. For Miss Roach, slave of her task-master, solitude, a window of opportunity is suddenly presented by the appearance of a charismatic American Lieutenant. His arrival brings change to the precarious society of the house and ultimately, to Miss Roach herself.

I acquired this for the Easter exchange 2015, but as it looks interesting I try to read it before sending off

So I got this book for the Easter exchange 2015, as it was in my partner's wish list; otherwise I would not have known about this book or author at all. And what happened is that I love this book! The characters and the writing is very impressive, the story has a delicious build-up and the menacing atmosphere gets denser as it progresses. The description of the war time feels very real, and gives a convincing surrounding and explanation to the story and the characters' frame of mind. I also liked the ending; Miss Roach ends up learning a thing or two about human nature and ends up in a better place and state of mind than she was during the most of the story.
