I enjoyed the Buso Renkin anime and enjoyed it, and then picked up the manga. (Got this fair-condition softcover from the used-manga shelves at Harrisons Comics.) This volume is a chance to read more about the flamboyant villain Papillon!

This series is a nicely whacky mix of special-ability/costumed-superheros battling special-ability/costumed-supervillains (who devour people), with lots of snarky chat between the school friends (and sometimes between the heroes and villains), and manages some very creepy bits as well as some touching ones. In this volume, Kazuki and Tokiko are tracking down the student who's behind the butterfly-mask, and come across an ailing upperclassman who turns out to be the very man himself. And he's planning to turn himself into a homunculous, superpowers and people-devouring and all, so they have to try and stop him - but they'll have to get past his bodyguard, a very studly homunculous named Washio, part hawk, part man, part machine, all awesome! (Sorry, he's a favorite of mine. I adore the devoted-bodyguard characters, even if they were created for the purpose.)

A good portion of the book is devoted to the big fight between our heroes and Washio, and when Tokiko has to sit it out due to the encroaching homunculous-virus inside her it seems that Washio might win - but Kazuki manages some impressive powering-up, even as he and Washio realize they have a lot in common.

Later, our heroes face down butterfly-mask, but are interrupted by the arrival of his family, who have their own agenda - and who suffer for it, big-time. I admit I was rather cheering for Papillon at that point - and besides, when he transformed into his speedo-wearing form I had to admire him. (It's probably best not to wonder how he pulled that big butterfly mask out of his G-string!)

This volume wraps up with a marvelous battle - and with our first look at Captain Bravo, another character I adore. But who will our heroes battle next?

[The TV Tropes page for the series is what tempted me to watch the anime in the first place; entertaining tidbits, but do beware of spoilers.]

I really liked the antagonist-Papillon Mask.

(And I think he pulled the mask out of his g string via Hammerspace, Gory, lol)
