7 out of 10

I recently watched the Buso Renkin anime and enjoyed it, so I was pleased to find this fair-condition copy of the first volume of the 10-volume series at Better World Books.

The series opens with Ordinary High School Student Kazuki having a terrible nightmare about being killed by a hideous monster. Come to find out this actually happened - and a mysterious girl named Tokiko saved his life by implanting a kakugane in his chest. And now he has magical-warrior powers, just as Tokiko does - but he has to learn how to use them if he's going to have a chance to survive against an increasing number of bizarre foes.

The series is a mix of high-school friendships and monster/magic action, with humor as well as drama - and with info-dumps here and there, to explain the different powers, the various foes (even the ones who only last one battle!) and more.

Continued in Volume 2!

[The TV Tropes page for the series is what tempted me to watch the anime in the first place; entertaining tidbits, but do beware of spoilers.]
