Synopsis/Review (credit: www.amazon.co.uk)

Two volumes of childhood memoirs by the author of the acclaimed Jean de Florette and Manon of the Springs.

With warmth, lucidity and good humour, Pagnol, a boy from the city, recounts the glorious summer days he spent exploring the sun-baked Provençal countryside. He vividly captures the atmosphere of a childhood filled with the simple pleasures: a meal, a joke, an outing shared with his close-knit and loving family."

(Bought second-hand at Help the Rural Child Charity Bookshop, Main Road, Retreat.)

The films Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources were the first art films I ever saw. They made a huge impression on me at the time.

It was therefore a welcome surprise to find the two autobiographical novels — My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle, bound into a single volume — at a second-hand bookshop. They did not disappoint. The scenery described reminded me of the spectacular landscapes from the two films, and it was interesting to trace the seeds of what would become the epic story as filmed. Pagnol was one of those authors that did not forget what it was like as a child.
