Actually published as sixth book of The Chronicles of Narnia, it is the first in the chronology of Narnia's fictional universe. An early example of a prequel ;)
The novel is set in London of 1900. The principal characters are Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, two pre-adolescent children. Digory will later appear as Professor Kirke in «The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe», by which time he will be a grown man in his sixties.
Digory and Polly have adventures after being transported to other worlds by the sorcerous experiments of Digory's Uncle Andrew. The story - which includes several autobiographical elements from Lewis's own life - features the genesis of Narnia and the introduction of the big antagonist Jadis (aka The White Witch) into the newly created Narnia. Nice and easy reading for summer time. Waiting for the others...
Looking for Harry Potter volumes I stumbled upon almost the whole collection of the Chronicles of Narnia. I decided to take them all and keep them together. I'll have to look for the missing one, though.
