Actually published as sixth book of The Chronicles of Narnia, it is the first in the chronology of Narnia's fictional universe. An early example of a prequel ;)
The novel is set in London of 1900. The principal characters are Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, two pre-adolescent children. Digory will later appear as Professor Kirke in «The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe», by which time he will be a grown man in his sixties.
Digory and Polly have adventures after being transported to other worlds by the sorcerous experiments of Digory's Uncle Andrew. The story - which includes several autobiographical elements from Lewis's own life - features the genesis of Narnia and the introduction of the big antagonist Jadis (aka The White Witch) into the newly created Narnia. Looking for Harry Potter volumes I stumbled upon almost the whole collection of the Chronicles of Narnia. I decided to take them all and keep them together. I'll have to look for the missing one, though.
