3 journalers for this copy...

While packing in Edinburgh I picked this up and hurriedly tucked it into my luggage planning reading it and releasing it in Orkney. My hopes of getting access to the internet while away were scuppered though, and also my plans to read it went awry. However, as other bookcrossers have raved about ‘The Earth Hums in B Flat’ and this publisher is a favourite of mine I have plans to track down and read another copy the book then return here with some review thoughts when I get a chance. Meanwhile the bookcover info:

Book burble: As heard on BBC Radio 4 ‘Book at Bedtime’;
‘Has our family got secrets?’
‘Every family has, Gewnni. Big secrets, small secrets, silly secrets, bad things we want to hide…’
Young Gwenni Morgan has a gift. She can fly in her sleep. She’s also fond of strawberry whip, detective stories and asking difficult questions. When a neighbour mysteriously vanishes, she resolves to uncover the secret of his disappearance and return him to his children.
She truthfully records what she sees and hears: but are her deductions correct? What is the real truth? And what will be the consequences – for Gwenni, her family and her community – of finding it out?
Gwenni Morgan is an unforgettable creation, and this portrait of life in a small Welsh town in the brink of change in the 1950s is enthralling, moving, and utterly real. Mari Strachan’s debut is a magical novel that will transport you to another time and place.
‘The Earth Hums in B Flat is a richly evocative, warm but unsentimental tale of a child detective struggling to piece together clues about the lives around her. These lives, and the characters who live them, are so vividly draws and Mari Strachan’s careful unravelling of the secrets they hide is extremely compelling. I loved this novel’ Catherine O’Flynn, author of What Was Lost.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This was a holiday with way more medical incidents than was preferable [though all seems on an even keel now] and access to wi-fi zones was continually just out of my grasp, so I’m happy to at last post some notes of where this book was released.

EDIT: THU 7 JAN 2016
A Canongate publication, so one’s expecting a rather out of the ordinary read, if not necessarily a cosy one. All predictions met. Sadly not able to fully appreciate this as I’m a bit low and this tunes into various miseries too much for me but its magical and haunting qualities were none-the-less apparent. Gwenni is a remarkable creation and though I didn’t go along with her voice as that of a child, oh wow, did I enjoy her point of view here. A remarkably curious, imaginative and likeable character was revealed by her voice! Despite my odd mood while reading it I do heartily recommend this.
