This is a really well done book, a departure from Hart's two series. Gretchen Gilman is almost 14, being raised by her grandmother during the turbulent times of World War II. A neighbor is murdered, small town gossip is rampant, and Gretchen finds her wings as a reporter while covering the story for the local daily.
