Thank you soffita1, arrived this morning.
I really enjoyed this short book set in Italy during and after Unification. At first it was a little difficult to see why it has so many accolades but taken in the context of it's time the reasons become clearer. Publication was turned down twice and was finally published posthumously in 1958 and became one of Italy's top selling novels. It is very critical of both the nobility and the clergy and indeed maybe even illuminates the origins of many of Italy's latter day difficulties. The story itself is engagingly told by Giuseppe Tomasi, himself a member of the Sicilian nobility and born shortly after the story's setting.
Thank you for sending this so quickly. I'm looking forward to reading it :)
