Three Weeks and Counting ...

London, here I come!

In three weeks time I'll be on my way to London for the 2008 bookcrossing convention at the Imperial College.
I'm really looking forward to it, since I'm simply addicted to books. Some people around me (parents and a few friends) are getting kind of jealous about me going to London. Just too bad I won’t be going that long, just 3 days. I kind of wish I could go longer, but I think I’d miss my work too much (finally found a really nice job after a three year search).

I'm sure that some friends (and a few colleagues) will be wondering what the H*** I'm doing in London "all by myself". They know me as a bit of a shy person, who loves to sit on the sofa with a good book and a huge mug of tea standing around (which is usually cold by the time I want to drink it).

I tend to have a ready if friends (and colleagues alike) ask about this contradiction: being shy on one hand and travelling abroad (alone!) on the other hand. So as soon as they ask, I start telling them about the fun part of BookCrossing: how books can get people connected and keep them in touch, whether it is locally or worldwide.

They probably never went on a book hunt or found a free book on their doorstep, never went to a BC meeting somewhere. And I also tell them how much fun it is to have a lot of free books at my disposal. I just have to go collect them from different places. Another great advantage would be that I don't need a complete library at my own (rather small) apartment.

As soon as they hear my explanation, my friends are getting a bit more interested and they almost envy me for having the courage to go abroad alone. But then again ...

I've been on holidays alone before, which turned out to be really nice and those holidays also gave me the courage to go to London this year. So London ... Here I come.
